Warm Weather!

May be an understatement, but it's W week!

Well Done!

We had an amazing day hosting the Mid West Regional SJ/endurance qualifier at Avon on Thursday, with RDA groups from Saxon, Wellow and Lyncombe Lodge also attending. We had made several adjustments to the programme to help horses and humans stay comfortable in the heat.

It was a relaxed and friendly competition, despite being a National Championships qualifier. The Avon Café team kept everyone fed and watered throughout the day.

Thank you to all who contributed on the day and in preparation for it. It was particularly pleasing to see some new Avon faces competing.

Avon secured qualification for RDA’s National Championships for 8 of our participants, out of a possible 16 entries!

Works on the Road (Again!)

Please be aware that another set of temporary traffic lights have appeared on the Henbury/Station Road/Crow Lane one-way-system. These are currently causing very long delays with traffic - we would advise avoiding that route completely and seeking alternative routes to the Centre.

  • For riders coming from Westbury-on-Trym / Henleaze / Henbury / Brentry you can cut through Canford Lane to Sylvan way, then approach the Centre from the Shirehampton end.

  • For riders coming from Cribbs Causeway / Filton or the M5 we suggest going one exit further to Avonmouth, then again coming up through Shirehampton and approaching from that route. If you are towing or have a lorry, it is best to turn onto Long Cross Road just prior to Shirehampton, as the route is easier for HGVs and towing vehicles.

Welcome Update From Your Park

Many thanks for supporting Your Park Bristol and Bath by attending their event on Friday 27th March, to discuss Bristol City Council’s plans to develop the accessibility of one of Bristol’s parks. In total 38 Disabled people and unpaid carers attended this event.

Everyone that attended this event were fantastic in sharing their experiences and insights.

During this session we looked at 5 different parks:

  • Dame Emily Park (Bedminster)

  • Doncaster Road Park (Southmead)

  • Eastville Park (Eastville)

  • Greville Smyth Park (South Bristol)

  • Hillfields Park (Hillfields)

Everyone was encouraged to discuss which of these 5 parks should be developed by Bristol City Council. 32 people completed a voting form. Eastville Park was eventually chosen to receive a full access assessment and investment through Bristol City Council Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding.

Eastville Park is:

  • A well-used, well-loved park with some facilities and a wide range of community activity

  • Strong transport links, including being close to the M32 and having lots of bus routes, making it accessible from across Bristol

  • A large and varied landscape, with space to support different experiences and access needs including quieter areas and sensory environments

  • Existing accessible features, including toilets and routes that already support some wheelchair access

  • High potential for impact, with the chance to improve accessibility rather than build from scratch

The next stage of this project is to make a plan for how to improve the park with local Disabled people and unpaid carers

They will be running 5 to 6 workshops, and park visits to make an Access Plan for the park in July and we are looking for people to be involved.

It would be wonderful if you could support us in promoting this opportunity to your members. We are looking for disabled people and unpaid carers which:

  • Identify as a Disabled Person or Unpaid Carer?

  • Live in Eastville or Stapleton?

  • Can commit to attend 5 workshops starting in July?

They are encouraging people to go to this webpage and complete the form: Eastville Park chosen for Bristol’s next accessible park project to register for this opportunity.
